This is me. Baabiitawigiizhigookwe, or more commonly, Baabiitaw Boyd. Language Instructor by day and Publisher by night. I never sleep… almost.
About Us
Paakit Knife Press is an independent publishing house with a mission to celebrate and preserve the richness of Ojibwemowin—the Ojibwe language—through literature.
Founded by language preservationist, Baabiitaw Boyd, in 2023, our press is committed to supporting Ojibwe authors and bringing their stories, voices, and perspectives to a wider audience.
Our name
Ojibwe people may be buried with a pocket “Paakit” knife as a tool to assist with the journey to the land of everlasting happiness (Gaagige Minawaanigozigiwining) in the west. While a pocket knife is a modern item, it falls under the category of tools that an individual would need and use in daily life. This practice is part of the traditional belief in an afterlife that is a continuation of the life previously lived, where the spirit needs familiar items for its journey.
Paakit Knife Press was developed to, and is dedicated to, preserving the Ojibwe Language and Culture. It serves an important need in continuing the traditions of the Anishinaabe and ensuring their ability to be used on a daily basis.
